Unwriting (Pencil Line)

The four-channel video installation Unwriting was preoccupied with the fragility of language and communication. In one sequence, a pencil tip breaks, and then draws a line from left to right. The traces of this gesture are seen here: shattered fragments of pencil lead are scattered across the white expanse of the page; a pencil line leads our eye away from this explosion and out of the frame. Writing is always shadowed by the possibility of failure – the breaking pencil tip – but failure can be a place for invention, a means for discovering new possibilities, new lines of escape.
